Those people leaving the city at the end of August: you snicker in their direction.
Because they’ll have to wait to taste the new gin.
Stick around town and say hello to Jos. A. Magnus & Co., a new distillery-and-cocktail-bar combo named for a legendary pre-Prohibition distiller, soft-opening Saturday in Ivy City.
Here are some facts about this place:
It’s located directly (and conveniently) above Atlas Brew Works. So go there beforehand. Or after... hand.
The gin will be ready on Saturday. It’s called Vigilant Gin. It’s a London dry style made with juniper berries grown in an Oregon backyard.
The eight-year-old bourbon will be ready on September 12. It’s currently aging in a mix of sherry and cognac barrels. Which seems like a good thing for it to do.
You can tour the operation. Check out the two hybrid stills, the fermenters and the barrels.
There’s also a bar. It’s called the Murray Hill Club. There you’ll find leather couches, a copper-topped bar—and the former bartender behind the Gin Joint. She’ll be mixing up all sorts of experimental, one-off drinks.
You can have a party in the tasting room, with its long tables and windows looking out onto the cemetery across the street.
Pour a little out for them.
