Bring your bike (or someone else’s bike) and hit the 45-mile W&OD trail through Northern Virginia. But stop when you hit mile marker 25.5. Because there’s a new brewery there called Old Ox, with a brick-lined tasting room and a fondness for IPAs. And hopefully Lycra.
Middleburg. It’s where you go when you’re in search of a foxhunt. Or some new tweed. Or better yet, to check out the area’s newest distillery. Mt. Defiance is turning out barrel-aged ciders, brandy and absinthe. Which all mix well with tweed but not foxhunts.
First, enlist someone you wouldn’t mind spending a weekend with at the Inn at Little Washington. Then... don’t go there. Instead, go a block away, where you’ll find the White Moose, a minimalist retreat with faux animal heads, vaulted ceilings and a secret supper club. You have chosen wisely.
When Governor McAuliffe announced the new Virginia Oyster Trail, he did it here, at this winery. So sure, you’ll find wine and oysters. But also: a pool, kayaks and four cottages with fireplaces and outdoor showers. Which are great places to have some wine.
You’re going to invite a date to camp on the beach with you. You’re going to promise them that they’ll see rockets. Then, you’ll deliver on that promise. See, NASA launches rockets from just off the Chesapeake, and you can see them all along the Assateague seashore. Rocket date: check.
