A Coffee, Cider and Live Music Spot From the Whistler People

Go Ahead and Stay a While at This Avondale Funhouse

The Whistler hosts some great local musicians from around town.

But you already knew that.

What you didn't know is that they've been holding back on you. Waiting for the day when they could bring bands from all over the country together in Avondale and, sure, throw in some cider while they're at it. That day is today. That place is Sleeping Village. That slideshow is here.

It's the type of place where you can while away the entire day, starting with a cup of coffee and a West Town Bakery croissant in one of the blue leather booths. Then, when you're damn good and ready, move on over to the stone bar and select one of 56 draft offerings from a menu board that's projected on a wood-paneled wall.

And that draft list includes one of the largest cider selections in the city. So you can have your Virtue Michigan Cheery cider and Seattle Cider's Syrah barrel-aged Winesap Rosé, too. This is the same crew that opened one of the most revered cocktail bars in the city, so they also offer a Manhattan, Old Fashioned, margarita and Negroni. If you insist.

Come March, you'll be sipping all of this in the split-level theater, which will host the likes of rock stars and comedians, plus the occasional dance party.

You knew you weren't getting out of this without a dance party.

Sarah Freeman is often accused of hiding secrets in her hair. She can make any cocktail, as long as that cocktail is a rye Old Fashioned, and has never met a saison she didn’t like.
