Overanalyzing Elsa Hosk's Instagram

Drawing Wildly Irresponsible Conclusions About Sweden's Greatest Export, Via Her 'Gram

Sometimes, in an attempt to sneak a peek into the interior lives of the rich and famous, we’re forced to launch an investigation into the evidence at the public’s disposal. By which we mean, grossly overanalyze whom these people choose to follow on Instagram.

Today, we take a look into the deep follows of one Elsa Hosk, who is quite possibly the coolest supermodel in the world. In addition to being a Victoria's Secret angel, she's an anti-human-trafficking activist, a self-styled streetstyle legend in her own time and a former professional basketball player in Sweden. She also happens to be all over the Milan runways this week. Let's see what Freud, Jung and Rogers have to say about the lass. Just kidding, let's dive headlong down the rabbit hole and bullshit this thing...

The Bell Curve

Hosk is arguably the most innately stylish of the Insta generation of models, and that's reflected in some of her follows. Along with the requisite fellow supermodels, she's got a smattering of lower-key style accounts (including some menswear), vintage shops and unassailably cool inspiration boards. See below:

Outliers

@nonviolenceproject

A lot of models focus their philanthropic attention on, say, animal-related causes. Hosk follows (admittedly we have no idea if it goes beyond that) an anti-violence organization that does outreach to youth with education, sports and a lot of celebrity ambassadors. Depending on how she was put on to them, this seems like a little bit more well-thought-out, less perfunctory cause. Not that we don't love animals.

@dertbagus

An obscure men's streetwear label from Connecticut. It's also favored by Kanye but still hasn't quite blown up. Again demonstrating her unassailable, modern Miles Davis-ian coolness.

@springplace

A high-end, private NYC collaborative workspace. Basically SoHo House meets WeWork. Hosk launched a capsule collection with Bik Bok there not long ago. We like to think her collaborative workspace membership implies a less fussy, more social personality, along with a work ethic that puts her beyond the average "model + X" public figure.

@hillaryclinton

All that matters is that this isn't Trump.

@bigbaldhead

The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus. Is Elsa a fan of the zombie genre? A closet Boondock Saints superfan? There are no other real actors on her follows list. This is quirky.

Diagnosis

Hosk's a less-than-rugged individualist, either eschewing a stylist altogether in regular life or doing a phenomenal job hiding said stylist. Having grown up in Sweden, her affinity for Hillary Clinton suggests an understanding of the benefits of at least partially socialized health care. She has entrepreneurial interests outside of modeling, as she's currently dating Tom Daly and has a quiet, communal workspace in SoHo, at which she can get shit done on a laptop, nestled in a marginally comfortable piece of modern furniture. She's doing just fine.
