If HBO comedy series were swimmers, Veep would be Michael Phelps.

If HBO comedy series had people names, Veep would be Carhart Steele.

If HBO comedy series were snacks, Veep would be Gushers.

We get it, universe. It’s a good show.

But I’d like to take this opportunity to officially endorse Silicon Valley for the upset in the 2016 Emmy category of Outstanding Comedy Series.

Full disclosure before I go on: I stopped watching Veep after the first few episodes. [Shields face. Endures seven minutes of fruit-and-vegetable throwing from seething crowd. ] But that kind of says a lot, doesn’t it? Nothing against the insanely talented Julia Louis-Dreyfus or anything. She’s a national treasure. It just... didn’t engage me.

To illustrate my point that this upset needs to happen on September 18, I first thought about deploying a head-to-head comparison between the one-liners of Selina Meyer and Erlich Bachman. Then I thought about breaking down the fool-headed subplots of the supporting actors. Then I realized that I lack the type of general TV-related fanaticism to intelligently pick apart two shows of this caliber.

So instead, I’ll do it unintelligently. Yes, I could sit there and watch Richard Hendricks fumble and fidget his way through the cutthroat douchery of Palo Alto all day. I could listen to Erlich Bachman spew one-liners like “We’ll call you when we want pleated khakis” all day. I could bear witness to Gilfoyle and Dinesh’s forbidden love—you guessed it—all day.

But rather than doing that, I’ll just say this: after three seasons of nary a fake win between them, Team Pied Piper deserves this real one.

In the meantime, I’ll stick to getting my political comedy from the news.

Kelly Larson gets mistaken for a woman via email on a daily basis. He also spends a fair amount of time thinking about sloths, telling bad jokes and wondering where all the gin is.
