Evanston’s First Brewpub Is Here

Howard Street.

On one side, there is Chicago.

On the other, a strange land totally devoid of pubs that brew their own beer.

The natives call this place Evanston.

And life there may never be the same: Peckish Pig soft-opens Thursday, ushering in a brave new world of brewpubbing.

Of course, it will take about a week or so before their first two beers launch (an English-style ale and an IPA). But, hey, that’s scheduling for you.

Still, 42 other beers will be there to amuse you, including Restless Years, from local heroes Temperance Beer Co. Plus, there are off-kilter cocktails like the sriracha-limoncello number called The Red Line.

The vibe is easy, relaxed—big chairs in the front and wooden plank tables give it a coffeehouse vibe. Come here with a group of old friends for some light dinner conversation. If you need a topic, just look at the menu.

Debate the merits of using chorizo in hamburgers. Ponder the wisdom of deep-frying ham hocks and then drizzling them with salted caramel. Speak in hushed, reverent tones about something called Deep-Fried Jam Butty, essentially a deep-fried peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

Fair warning: your mouth will probably be full.
