Reuben Pies and Fried Cauliflower in JP

Let’s not talk about what happened in Denver this weekend.

Instead, let’s talk about what happened in Jamaica Plain this weekend.

Because Syrian pies filled with Reuben sandwiches happened in Jamaica Plain this weekend...

And so did Aurum, a new dispensary of traditional Syrian pies filled with highly untraditional things, now open in Jamaica Plain.

It all started when two friends met at a diner. They laughed. They bonded. They decided that filling a little room in JP with ovens, 16 seats and Mickey Mouse wall art would be a really good idea. So they did that. And that became this.

It’s quite casual, as you might expect. Just the spot to pack a table with some friends and share baskets of fried cauliflower while your pies bake. And about those: they’re shaped like triangles, they’re crispy and flaky on the outside, and they’re soft and doughy on the inside.

In other words, they’re the perfect vessels to stuff with chicken, gouda and homemade whiskey-BBQ sauce like the aptly named Whiskey River. Or with pastrami and sauerkraut like The Reub.

Pies happen. You’re full. You couldn’t possibly eat more. Not even if fried dessert pies with Nutella and bananas showed up.

Fine, you’ll eat those.
