Ward Have Mercy

A Low-Lit Whiskey Hideout in the North End

Well, well, well.

Look what we have here.

It’s...

Well, it’s Ward 8, a dark and brooding hideaway fit for a film noir set but better at being a cocktail bar, opening Monday in the North End.

There’s a good chance you’ve been here, back when this was Nebo. Yeah, they got rid of all the Nebo. In its place: a dimly lit imbibery with smoked mirrors and a wraparound marble bar behind which a rather handsomely arranged cocktail list lives.

You’ll see headlines named for things that are great. Like “Gin.” And “Whiskey.” And “Brandy.” And under each is a list of various concoctions made from said spirits. The bourbon-and-cognac-laced Prescription Julep, for example. It’s not: complicated. It is: fantastic.

And when the bar has served its purpose, settle into a black leather banquette backlit by a warehouse light. Maybe you’re by yourself. Maybe you’re sitting across from someone. Either way, that’s when you’ll see that they have a full food menu with things like Maple Duck Chili Wings on it.

Oh, and look for dessert service soon. It’ll involve the likes of housemade frozen custard with bourbon caramel sauce. But for now, you’ll just have to wait.

And eat leftover pumpkin pie or something.
