Blowtorched Sushi on Newbury Street

So... Sox in the series. Better do something at home to celebrate.

Like drizzle whiskey over some sushi and light it with a blowtorch.

Better yet: have the former sushi chef to the Patriots do it for you. At this place: Ikura, an oaky cove of lobster maki and nigiri pyrotechnics, opening Thursday on Newbury Street.

This place is tiny. And filled with shiny oak surfaces. It might bring words to mind like “nook,” “den” or “cubbyhole.” Or just... “perfect small Japanese place to take a date.” So grab a sushi buddy and start perusing that menu. You’ve got more than 100 maki to choose from.

But you’re selecting the Playboy Roll. Because it’s a shrimp-tempura-and-tuna maki that’s dripped with whiskey and blowtorched tableside. Feel free to blow it out and make a wish. Or just blow it out. Yeah, definitely blow it out.

After that... you’ll probably be finding it difficult to follow the whole blowtorched-sushi thing. So just sit back and sip a Sapporo or sake while à la carte yellowtail nigiri shows up at your table. Yes, you can get that topped off with a blowtorch, too.

The yellowtail, not the Sapporo.
