Old Town’s New Ready-for-Anything Spot

A beer, a steak and a patio.

On a beautiful day like this, you can’t ask for more.

Although... if someone tossed some Japanese-spiced pork rinds and crushed-velvet banquettes into the equation, you wouldn’t complain.

Promising news: someone has.

Direct your attention to The Refinery, a handsome new lair of casualness in Old Town that seems pretty much up for whatever, now open.

This place has been doing its thing for a few weeks on Wells Street. It sorta feels like a soaring, brick-lined palace, complete with a shady sidewalk seating area, rounded booths and a 10-screen video wall displaying modern photography (no, that doesn’t include Jay Cutler’s smirk).

So this is great for when you’re meeting someone and you don’t want to overdo it... but you don’t want to underdo it, either. Could be a brunch double date. You’ll go for the chilaquiles and Palomas. Could be meeting the parents for a glass of wine. You’ll opt for the pinot noir on tap and truffle deviled eggs.

One other thing: when you’re in the mood for Manhattans on tap and duck confit poutine at the bar, they’ve also got you covered.

Yes, it’s a pretty specific mood.
