Spirit of ’63

A Swanky Sports Bar near Loyola

Fifty years ago, the Loyola men’s basketball team won the NCAA tournament.

It’s time to honor them.

Step 1: Get the entire team inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

Step 2: Turn Hamilton’s, that crummy old college dive bar near campus, into a fitting tribute.

Let’s tackle step 2 first...

Behold: Bar 63, an homage to Loyola’s last championship season in the form of a genuinely handsome sports bar, now open in Edgewater.

Despite the college ties, this place feels like a grown-up, neighborhood-friendly sports pub. (The owner is a partner at the Boarding House.) They’ve brought in 20 flat-screens, installed big, deep leather booths and added wallpaper made from vintage newspaper clippings of that championship season.

If you’re planning to watch the rest of the Bulls-Net series and beyond, you probably want a place that knows about die-hard fan spirit. They also have thick cheeseburgers and solid drafts like Bell’s Two Hearted Ale. Because sometimes die-hard spirit isn’t enough.

Though, truthfully, if you’re here late on weekends, maybe playing a game of pool near the back bar, you’ll probably find the DJ creating more of a party atmosphere. That means you may encounter a co-ed or two drinking a Pineapple Upside Down Cake, a cocktail made of cake-flavored vodka and pineapple juice.

We just thought you should be warned.
