Paella, Octopus and Mezcal-Jalapeño Cocktails

None 4 Photos Pulpo
True, the solstice has yet to hit, but some would consider this the first official Friday of summer. Those people include you.

So time to start acting like it. And razor clams, grilled octopus and giant pitchers of sangria are a great place to start.

So welcome to your roster of summer dining options Pulpo, a new haven of tapas and mezcal cocktails, now open.

You’ll undoubtedly get a little déjà vu in the space. For the last year, it housed Tackle Box’s Cleveland Park location and recently hosted Bandolero’s preopening pop-up. And now, they’ve gone totally bare-bones: concrete floors, distressed brick and exposed ceilings.

The obvious play is to decamp with a date under the giant octopus mural (because... well, why not) and get started on tapas plates like squid-ink paella with whole prawns, poached eggs with serrano ham and “lollipops” of tuna, anchovies and octopus. (How many licks does it take? None—you’re better off biting.)

Now, you may have noticed something’s missing. It’s true. Their liquor license is expected to come through on Wednesday. In the meantime, look forward to cocktails like the Pulpo Picante (mezcal, pear puree, jalapeño syrup) and pitchers of sangria that you can pass around among a big group at the communal table in the front window.

Or just finish yourself.
