The Month Ahead

What to Do in April

It's almost April, which means you're probably thinking about a few staples: spring breezes, baseball... catfish. Here, the six best things to do this month, including a celebration with our old friend Jack.

The World Catfish Festival and the Annual Pig Cookin' Contest
APRIL 9-10

The World Catfish Festival and the Annual Pig Cookin' Contest

Warm weather means one thing: delicious grilled meat. Two great places to enjoy it next weekend: Newport, North Carolina's Pig Cookin' Contest, the country's largest BBQ devoted to grilling whole hogs, and the World Catfish Festival in Belzoni, Mississippi (the self-proclaimed catfish capital). They crown Miss Catfish at the latter; we assume Miss Piggy won't be defending her title at the former.

National Karaoke Week
APRIL 11-17

National Karaoke Week

Not that you needed an excuse to fire up Neil Diamond, but here it is anyway: the second full week in April is a seven-day celebration of sing-along debauchery. (At least, according to a cabal of enthusiasts based in Westminster, Colorado, which is good enough for us.) Go ahead, give it a try: "Hands, touching hands... reaching out... touching me... touching youuu..."

Supermodels for Sale

Way back when, you and Eva Herzigova had a pretty good run—just you, her, long walks on the beach... Too bad you didn't have a camera on hand. Relive the memories at the Phillips de Pury Photographs auction, which includes shots of Eva, Naomi Campbell and Uma Thurman in various stages of undress. Which happens to be your favorite kind of undress.

Secretary's Day

Secretary's Day

We're already on record as fans of the invaluable assistance provided by the secretaries of the world. So join us by taking a day and appreciating your favorite Joan Holloway, Miss Moneypenny or Maggie Gyllenhaal type. Or just watch Mad Men Season One again.

Jack Nicholson's Birthday
APRIL 22

Jack Nicholson's Birthday

For his 70th birthday party, Jack rounded up 70 scantily clad women to serve up a seven-foot cake. (This is known as "the full Jack.") We're not sure what arguably the coolest bastard in the business plans to do this year, but you're welcome to attempt the same feat in his honor.

New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival
APRIL 23

New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival

Put the phrases "New Orleans" and "Jazz" together and you pretty much know what you're going to get. (A mediocre '70s NBA team.) But sometimes the food at JazzFest gets overlooked: tons of locally made jambalaya, po'boys and, yes, gumbo. Also, the only vendor debuting this year: La Divina Gelateria, a couple of Florentine expats providing local gelato to get you through that NO heat.
