To Ichi His Own

A Sushi Spot and Izakaya on Mission Street

Ichi is the loneliest number that you’ll ever do...

Ni can be as bad as one, it’s the loneliest number since the number one...

Not trying to be a Valentine’s Day downer here. Just picturing a world without Ichi after it closes tomorrow.

Good thing we don’t have to live in that world, because Ichi Sushi + Ni Bar opens down the block on Tuesday—“ichi” means one, “ni” means two, and together this is the three-times-bigger incarnation of the original. Phew.

Amid the airy gray openness and Douglas fir, it’s really two separate spots in here. If tonight goes well for you, keep this in mind for the sushi-date follow-up early next week. You’ll want to stay up front for that. That’s Ichi. Sushi at the counter, intimate enough for two.

But you’ll recall that if you ever wanted to meet up with a few friends for sake and Japanese beer at the old spot... you were pretty screwed. No room for big groups. Here, there’s a majestic izakaya in the back—that would be Ni—with its own menu and tables big enough for all of you. Tables soon covered in chicken-thigh and pork-shoulder skewers, tripe stew, that kind of thing.

Just room enough for tripe stew.
