The Mei Mei Street Kitchen Truck Goes Indoors

None 4 Photos Mei Mei
If someone told you years ago, “Someday you’ll read an email about eating scallion pancakes for lunch,” you’d be like... “Okay.”

Well, prepare to say okay, people.

Prepare to say okay.

Because here comes Mei Mei, a pancake-and-dumpling-heavy food truck’s proud foray into the brave new world of... also being a brick-and-mortar restaurant, hoping to open next week in Audubon Circle.

You’ll notice some differences from the truck right away. Like the fact that this is a stationary building and not a truck. And that it’s got exposed brick walls and bright-yellow chairs. And shelves filled with cookbooks and dried serrano peppers in mason jars. Building things. Not truck things.

Collect some friends and stake out a few counter seats in front of the open kitchen. That’s where you’ll catch the creation of truck favorites like the Fat Schantz, an envelope of griddled scallion pancakes filled with roast beef and German potato salad.

It’ll be lunch only at first, but after a couple weeks, they’ll add a dinner service full of things you can’t serve from an automobile. Like a pork chop that feeds four. And entire lamb heads.

Lamb heads are definitely inside-food.
