Roaming South Africa in Search of Golf

None 8 Photos Legends of the Green
The nomadic South African golfer: he roams the land in search of new challenges, ever-plusher lodges and some way—any way—to clear the hippos on the ninth hole.

He has no natural predators, except for the dreaded bogey.

Welcome to Legends of the Green, a lodge-hopping, game-chasing golf tour through South Africa, taking reservations now.

You don’t need the knowledge of a Jack Hanna or the skills of a Rory McIlroy to do this, but those things would help. Your objective: to play four courses throughout the country in 13 days, interspersed with bush walks, game drives and the occasional après-links swim in a lagoon.

Starting from Legend Golf & Safari Resort, your “Caddy Ranger” will help you choose a club for the Vijay Singh hole—or any of the 17 other holes, each designed by a pro golfer (and they’ll show you how to club a crocodile with a 5-wood, should it come to that).

Elsewhere, it’s all luxury trains and private planes to get to your next course/game lodge. That is, if you aren’t sick of air travel after the Extreme 19th—a par 3 that requires helicopter access because it’s perched on a 1,400-foot cliff. You’ll get six balls to launch out onto a green cut in the shape of Africa.

Feel free to take a mulligan for altitude sickness or vulture interference.
