Your New Mountain Hideout in Tahoe

This is it.

The first Friday of official unofficial summer. Good time to be thinking about vacation.

We’re thinking beaches. We’re thinking mountain trails. We’re thinking bears and hot tubs. We’re thinking bears in hot tubs.

Actually, no. Scratch that last one. Anyway...

Welcome Basecamp Hotel, a swank new 50-room hotel that helps you celebrate the great outdoors (but, you know, indoors), taking reservations now for June 20 and beyond in South Lake Tahoe.

If Wes Anderson had filmed Moonrise Kingdom in Tahoe—or if Smokey the Bear needed to pamper himself for a few days—he would have stayed here. As the name implies, it’s a sort of wilderness HQ with easy access to mountain biking, golfing or stand-up paddleboarding in the lake this summer, and then skiing and boarding come winter.

The decor: outdoorsy. Think walls painted with murals of peaceful groves of trees or extremely lifelike bears. But not too outdoorsy: you’ll also relax on chesterfield sofas, sip Venezuelan spiced hot chocolate by a fire pit and sleep in plush, custom king-size beds.

For the best mountain views, opt for Room 201. It’s the penthouse suite, and it comes with a stocked-upon-request wet bar. But if you want to approximate the campsite experience, there’s the birch-forest-walled Great Indoors Room complete with canvas tent, electric log fire and glow-in-the-dark stars.

Or, like, just go outside.
