Two Levels of Cocktails and Music in SoMa

They say less is more.

We say more is more.

Like a random new cocktail bar. That comes with contortionists. And has a subterranean nightclub with a custom, gold-hued sound system imported from London.

See, more is more.

Introducing Monarch, a new bi-level hideout that combines an upscale cocktail bar, a DJ-driven nightclub and a veritable Cirque du Soleil under one roof, opening Wednesday on the edge of SoMa.

For those nights when you’re looking to blur the lines between... everything, this multipurpose den will be at your service. But it’ll be at its best on those nights when you’re looking for a quick happy hour martini on Monday, and somehow wind up leaving on Tuesday.

To make the most of this place, look for the giant magnifying glass/copper pipe and French horn fixtures. That’s how you know you’re getting close to the antique redwood bar. From there you’ll see a hole in the wall that separates the bar and the room behind the bar—that’s where the contortionists, trapeze artists or other cabaret entertainers will perform throughout the night.

If that’s not enough, after a few rounds of bourbon/Fernet-spiked Kingmakers at one of the velvet settees in the Victorian-style lounge, you’ll want to head downstairs for live music during the week and DJs during the weekend.

Again, blurred lines...
