Pad Thai and Cocktails in North Beach

You're always on the lookout for the next great date spot. Trouble is, there hasn't been a new one in a while.

And the weekend is coming up.

Allow us to suggest Le Banyan, a sophisticated Thai restaurant in North Beach that quietly opened weeks ago and is the ideal spot for a pre-seduction feast.

Think of Banyan as a tranquil alternative to the clamorous steakhouses filling up the city these days. Secluded in North Beach's less-frenetic version of Ocean Drive, and housed in the circular ground floor of a Deco apartment building, Banyan is perfect for getting to know your date over hushed conversation and excellent coconut curry. Owned by a French couple who helms a similar Le Banyan in France, it's the kind of place you might stumble upon in an old Colonial house in Phuket.

Start off with a cocktail at one of the white linen-covered sofas in the outdoor lounge that faces the ocean, then segue to the dining room outfitted in sumptuous satins, golden Buddhas and dark rattan seating. The French influences don't translate to the food, which means your grilled chicken with lemongrass and steamed fish seasoned with lime and chili are pure Bangkok.

So much better than impure Bangkok.
