David Grutman Brings A Plant-Based Wonderland to South Beach

Sushi-Less Sushi and Octopus-Less Octopus for All

It's not every day that you get to draw comparisons between Miami and Toronto.

It's not every day that you get to eat faux octopus, either.

What a day this is going to be, people...

Because hailing from the great white north is Planta, a new plant-based restaurant bearing many a delicious flavor that you may or may not have been expecting to be delicious. It's open now, and here it is in pictures.

This comes from David Grutman, the same guy who gave you LIV, OTL and Komodo. Yes, it's easy on the eyes. And yes, you'll want to accept an invitation from someone fetching who's trying to convince you to do the whole vegan thing. A cold-pressed cocktail amid the beachy, Mid-Modern dining room should be all the convincing you need that it's all going to be okay.

As you sip your rum-, berry- and kombucha-filled mojito, you'll note the leafy wallpaper, the root-shaped chair legs, the cherry-like light sculptures and the date in front of you wondering why you keep noting things.

Focus. Then, grab an interior courtyard table surrounded by windows beneath the large skylights. Scan the menu for something new. Something unique. Something like vegetarian sushi or that charred "octopus," which isn't octopus at all, but rather king oyster mushrooms with pico de gallo and chulpe corn.

Finally, cap the night off with a Carrot Old Fashioned with bourbon, carrot juice, apple brandy and herb liquor.

Evil geniuses, those vegans.

On a typical Wednesday, Ginger Harris is likely seeking reposado tequila, squeezing her way to the front of a concert or jumping on the back of an Indian motorcycle. That’s just Wednesdays, though.
