Under a String of Patio Lights in South Beach: Tequila and a Roving Salad Cart

This past summer, news of Beachcraft at 1 Hotel closing its doors surfaced.

You wondered what would take its place.

If you could still take a date there.

And what, cooked by which chef, would wind up on your plates in its next life.

Actually, you probably just heard the news and moved on. Regardless, you should know that Habitat is there now, it's open right this very moment, and it's pretty damned easy on the eyes.

The vibe is pretty earthy and mellow. Natural woods. Soft blues and browns. Little bit of greenery at the bar. Also at the bar: outstanding cocktails like the Fifth Elements with tequila, pineapple and avocado. Nothing is safe from avocado.

Drinks in hand, it behooves you to then head out to the patio, where you'll grab seats beneath the string lights and more greenery. The menu is from a Pubbelly guy and a La Broche guy. The live greens cart... well, exists. Yes, it's a salad cart that roams around and produces bespoke salads for you. What a world.

But eventually, you'll move on to more pressing matters like the Presa Iberico Carpaccio with apple, pistachio, manchego and pickled peppers. Your date will have the local wahoo "esqueixada" with olive spheres and grated tomato.

Or maybe they won't. Either way, it's there.

On a typical Wednesday, Ginger Harris is likely seeking reposado tequila, squeezing her way to the front of a concert or jumping on the back of an Indian motorcycle. That’s just Wednesdays, though.
