It’s at the Diplomat, and It’s Called Monkitail

Tokyo by way of Hollywood.

The local Hollywood.

With more clandestine karaoke.

That’s the vibe you’ll experience tonight at Monkitail, the new Japanese spot from the guy behind Buddakan in New York and Pod in Philadelpia. It’s open now at The Diplomat.

Take a look around. Upon entering, you’ll notice the glass lanterns hanging from the wooden beams overhead. Glide past them, date in tow, to the outdoor patio overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Feel the breeze in your hair. Sip on some sake or a Monkitail cocktail with bourbon, rye, vermouth and barrel stave smoke.

You’ll eventually make your way to the sushi bar. You know what happens at those. Or to a dark leather banquette for some pastrami bao buns. The plates here are meant for sharing, so keep that in mind when ordering the albacore tataki seared over an open flame.

And as promised, there’ll be a hidden karaoke bar toward the back of the dining room called Nokku. That’s Japanese for “knock,” which is what you and that date will have to do to gain entry once it opens in mid-May.

That, and be willing to pop off a stirring duet of “Islands in the Stream.”

On a typical Wednesday, Ginger Harris is likely seeking reposado tequila, squeezing her way to the front of a concert or jumping on the back of an Indian motorcycle. That’s just Wednesdays, though.
