Lording Over a Colonial Manor in Vietnam

Great for starting civilizations.

Or if you’re out of ideas for baby names.

Or if you just need a lazy ride to a majestic mansion in Vietnam.

Welcome to the Anantara Hoi An Resort, a 93-room manor on the banks of the Thu Bon River, just brimming with French Colonial stateliness. It’s taking reservations now.

If Gone with the Wind had a Vietnamese spin-off, this is where it’d happen: a 19th-century-style estate that’s just one endless row of white columns and breezy verandas.

Begin by lounging all over your two-floor suite like it’s your job. You’ve got swings on your balcony. Wicker chairs in your first living room. A Vietnamese daybed in your other living room. Then move to the terrace bar, summon a gin sling and get back to work. By which we mean lounging.

As for dinner, throw out a couple yeas and nays to your personal chef, and he’ll bring a customized feast to your private poolside pavilion. After you eat, summon your butler. He’s waiting with cigars. Also, seats for two on a sunset cruise along the lantern-dotted riverbanks.

The next day, it’s off to explore the marble mountains in the distance, or the two nearby beaches... or just the spa, where a four-handed massage awaits.

Six hands if you bring the butler.
