A Passage to India

A Beachy New Indian-Street-Food Joint

Today, we take you on a journey.

To a foreign land of exotic spice, unusual beer and Bollywood.

You guessed it: Oakland.

Welcome to Juhu Beach Club, a beachy new house serving up Indian street food, opening Friday across the bay.

To be clear: it’s not actually a beach club. There’s zero sand and zero bikinis (sorry).

Instead, it’s more of a low-key joint—one where you’ll hang out over beers, snacks and home-style cooking by way of Mumbai. Chef/owner/Top Chef alum Preeti Mistry will take good care of you and your date. (Which reminds us: you should bring a date here.)

Inside is charmingly homey—wallpaper with monkeys on it, family photos from India, Bollywood art... But you’re not here for that, you’re here for the food. There’s the Chowpatty Chicken (it’s a slider, but more chicken-y). The Holy Cow (it’s a bread/curry situation filled with short ribs). The Curryleaf Coriander Shrimp (it’s curry leaf coriander shrimp).

To wash it all down, get some wine or a 22-ounce Taj Mahal.

The beer, not the world wonder.
