Thai Food and Whiskey in SoMa

You made donations. Knocked on doors. And today, you finally got the chance to cast your ballot.

Well, we’re happy to say your voice has been heard.

There’s a new Thai burger and whiskey joint a block from Willie Mays Plaza.

Prepare to inaugurate Root, a brick-walled sanctuary for whiskey, game watching and Thai-spiced burgers, now open.

Herewith, three times this place will come in handy:

When there’s a game on (and/or it’s lunchtime).
There are three flat-screens over the main bar, where you can feast on Thai twists on American ballpark grub: Spicy Basil Burgers, Thai Buffalo Wings and Prawns in a Blanket. (Yes, you read that right.)

After a hard day doing what you do.
Bring your colleagues to the main bar (with a giant Buddha head in front) or the smaller wine bar all the way in back. Bonus: there’s a third bar coming upstairs. It’ll be known as Alchemist Bar & Lounge, it’s from a Gitane vet, and it’s where you’ll get to know any intriguing colleagues a bit better...

When you require good whiskey and steak.
There’s a cozy little nook—sectioned off by a column—with its own whiskey list. The full lineup is slated to be unveiled in a few weeks, but suffice it to say you’ll like the 30-plus mostly American options chosen to pair with, say, mango steak.

American whiskey: a uniter, not a divider.
