Memorial Day through Independence Day: your ski colors don’t run (at least not for the hills of Argentina or glacier-France, anyhow). No, they summer. Right here in America. Thanks to the handful of snowy pastures we have left (see: below).
This 11,250-foot volcano: basically dormant. And almost entirely skiable through the warm season, because it’s an iced-over glacier. (Said volcano’s near-term eruption potential: 3% to 70%.) Well worth the chance to crash in the lodge where The Shining was shot, if you ask us.
You could take or leave Woodward Tahoe’s brand-new 33,000-square-foot indoor action-sports facility. But when its opening means the one-day reopening of the snow park outside, you get involved. Sharing a gondola with pros bearing the names of Tanner and Chas: more of a bonus.
There’s only one non-glacier ski resort still up and running, and it’s located just outside of Seattle, where the climate looks a lot like Northwest summer (read: 53 degrees and cloudy). That said, you’ll be out there skiing for one last weekend hurrah nonetheless. So bring your ski flannels.
Mount Bachelor, Oregon: one place where the snow kept falling, and falling... (to the tune of 528 inches to date). Most of which will stay groomed ahead of the US and Canadian National Nordic Teams’ arrival for training camp in a few weeks. Consider this your tryout.
New reason for threatening to move to Canada: the ability to ski, zipline and shoot rifles in the same day. That’s right—your summer glacier skiing now comes with an added Olympic mystique, thanks to the year-round biathlon program here. Not that you weren’t London-ready before.
