Things to do for July 22, 2010
Oysters, GoodFellas and Gratis Wine
The weekend isn’t called the weekend for nothing.
In a commendable, civic-minded effort to reduce traffic congestion on the East End, Navy Beach in Montauk is incentivizing boating with a gratis bottle of chilled rosé for the crew of any nautical vessel that arrives for lunch or dinner. And before you ask, yes, same deal for helicopters.
For those mornings when not even 12 seasonal German beers on tap can take the sting out of last night, Williamsburg’s newest beer garden is introducing a brunch menu of Schinken Ruhreier mit Schnitzel, Pfannekuchen mit Rote Grutze and other German comfort foods heavy on the sausage and ham but light on the pronounceability.
Normally, we wouldn’t suggest coming out of the witness protection program to attend a party in the East Village. But when that party includes a GoodFellas screening hosted by the real Henry Hill, it might be worth the risk. And yes, there will be stand-up comedy by Al Capone’s grandson, Chris Capone. And no, you can’t make this stuff up.
A Dance Party at 60 Thompson
You’ve traveled far and wide, or at least from the Hudson to the East River, in search of musical greatness. On Tuesday, you’ll be spared the journey to the eastern frontier of Alphabet City when Nublu, the hidden den of acoustic innovation and launching pad for the smooth/hipstery/dancey rock band Brazilian Girls, guest hosts at 60 Thompson. On the frontier of SoHo.
Oysters, Beer and More Oysters
There’s no exact science governing the pairing of oysters and microbrews, but the kitsch-loving brewmasters at Shmaltz Brewing Co. are going to match up their catalog of He’Brews with a four-course meal of raw oysters, fried oysters, swordfish and chocolate pudding. There may be an exact science when it comes to pudding.
