The Outsiders

You. Outside. Cocktails. Now.

It’s hot out there. Perhaps not hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk, but certainly hot enough to open a bar on one. So in honor of this foray into the (near) 80s, we bring news of three quietly just-opened outdoor squares of elegant consumption. Pace yourself. And bring plenty of sunblock.

The 130-Seat Porch at DB Garden

It’s been a while since you last rooftopped your way through the evening. So perhaps it would be wise to start slowly (and at a lower altitude) with a well-appointed veranda or two. Take to the second-floor DB Garden at the James Hotel, which has its own bar, cabana, outdoor chef’s table and root-vegetable-topped sangria. Happy hour: now an excellent source of beta-carotene.

The next best thing to a boozy brunch in Havana: a boozy brunch on the corner of 6th and A. Here, you’ll get white picket fences, wide-open French doors and a safe zone for Cuban cigar trafficking. Also, a gratis house cocktail, like the Jamaican-rum-heavy Planter’s Punch, with your Chorizo Benedicto. FYI, that means “Benedict” in Spanish.

THE BACKYARD

Going Yard at the Mulberry Project

Sit at a sun-exposed picnic table long enough, and certain feelings are bound to kick in. One being light-headedness. Two being the desire to barbecue. Luckily, each table in this graffiti-tagged yard space comes with its own electric grill. Perfect for cooking yourself a steak. Or using as an unnecessarily large coaster for your watermelon margarita.
