This week, Perks is taking half off your next pair of cult selvage denim jeans, fresh from the laboratory: the Denim Design Lab. It’s modern-day jean science, with a dash of old-timey alchemy. A little jean alchemy goes a long way.
Things to do for July 30, 2010
Boat Parties, Moonshine and Lingerie
The weekend just opened the fire hydrant.
You’ve never needed an excuse for an impromptu trip to Café Spiaggia. But we’ll give you one anyway. It’s remade itself—new fabrics, new sconces, servers clad in a shocking fabric called denim, sharing portions, lower prices and burrata-and-squash-blossom pizzas. Nothing gets your attention like new sconces.
You know your way around the business end of a baby back slab. But when a former Tru sous chef (and, more importantly, Memphis in May barbecue contest winner) opens a new spot with five kinds of sauce, peach smoke and his own moonshine, you’re still the ever-willing student.
A Festival of Wild Ice Cream
This weekend, you will be hot. You will crave ice cream. Really good ice cream. Maybe even gelato. The kind made in small tubs by obsessed people who do crazy things like mix bananas and curry, serrano chilies and corn bread, and chocolate custard and chili. Basically, your kind of people.
You’ve done a lot of things in bars. Thrown darts. Shot pool. Played pinball. Answered trivia. Tossed bags. Occasionally, you’ve had a drink. This bar-game pentathlon is strictly for glory (and fund-raising), but will give you a chance to do it all in one afternoon. They’ll throw in a beer too—not that you need performance enhancers.
The Lingerie Ball at Enclave
Take your average champagne-soaked nightclub. Add five Playmates in high heels and lingerie. Dress the staff in similar attire. Encourage female patrons to follow their lead. The result is what you like to refer to as “a good start.”
That sailing trip you’re planning to South America is still going to happen—just not this weekend. Your vessel is needed for urgent business: the annual floating party, dropping anchor off Oak Street Beach for an afternoon of music, mingling, splashing and interviewing potential first mates.
