Northern Grade Pops Up at Union Market

The six weeks between Memorial Day and Independence Day. Typically a period of diminished patriotic fervor.

But wait. There’s the Women’s World Cup. That works.

And also this: Northern Grade, a roving pop-up of American-made men’s stuff. It opens for the weekend in a couple hours at Union Market’s Dock 5 event space.

This is a big deal in terms of American manliness. It’s been all around the country (it’s even been to Richmond, for God’s sake) but never here. Until now.

So don’t get distracted by the Suburbia cocktail trailer set up outside the market. Or the Timber mobile pizza oven inside. Okay, get distracted for a bit. But then start to focus on the goods from the rest of the 26 vendors. Like:

—High-top canvas sneakers from the Brooklyn Circus (they’re from Brooklyn).

—Summery neckties and bow ties from Pierrepont Hicks.

—Duffel bags and military-inspired watches from Filson.

—Shockoe Atelier denim, sewn in Richmond.

—Coronado wallets and briefcases, made from horsehide, cowhide and bison in San Diego.

—DC brands you probably already know and love, like Federal, Mutiny and Gordy’s Pickle Jar.

It wouldn’t be an event without pickles.
