Hungry Like Der Wolf

A Woodsy German Beer Hall from the Verdugo Crew

Now, an important German lesson. Please repeat.

Guten tag.

Ja.

I’d love another beer, please.

Perfect.

You’re all set for Der Wolfskopf, a grand new drinking hall full of German beers and sausages that’s situated above a buried cocktail chamber, opening Tuesday in Pasadena. (See the slideshow.)

It means “the wolf head,” and it comes from the partners behind the Blind Donkey, Surly Goat and other great bars named after compromised animals (or not). Here’s another stunner. Housed in Pasadena’s old City Hall. Free factoid there.

Yep, a postcard-perfect German beer house of dark woods and communal tables shining under chandeliers and ceiling fans. Marble bar with 20 taps of magnificently unpronounceable beers going into giant glass steins.

When it gets crazy or just Oktoberfesty, expect to be on the huge tree-lined, red brick patio in back. It’s nice there. Good place for spicy kielbasa, cheesy spätzle mac and chicken schnitzel sandwiches. Drinking food.

And soon they’ll open downstairs. It’s a stealthy cocktail lounge with black leather booths and its own entrance. You’ll need a card to enter. They’ll be giving those to beloved regulars and people they like.

We like your chances.
