Things to do for February 24, 2011
Gratis Cupcakes, Tattooed DJs and Bison Meatloaf
The weekend is covered in truffle oil.
Miami loves Chaplin this week. Tonight you’ll get to watch the black-and-white classics The Rink and Modern Times the way old-school railroad barons did: in the courtyard of this sprawling Coral Gables estate with live organ music as a backdrop. Some things never change.
After-Parties at 8oz. Burger Bar
At these after-hours parties at 8oz., chef Govind Armstrong will be curating the menu (think Smoked Bison Meatloaf), and if you RSVP you’ll get a wristband granting you gratis Amstels and tequila from midnight until 2am every night. So... we recommend you RSVP.
Rocco’s Tacos Opens in Fort Lauderdale
It’s a gleaming new Mexican saloon on Las Olas, replete with 225 types of tequila, slow-roasted pork tacos and live mariachi bands. And from now until March 10, the bartenders will be sliding you a gratis margarita when you mention the Daddy. Think of it as a reward for your trek north.
Make it out to the beach by noon on Saturday, and you might happen upon Sweet Street Desserts’ new pop-up truck, which is ready to pass you gratis cupcakes, marshmallow squares, lemon crumb bars and chocolate chunk brownies. It’ll be cream-colored, and circling Ocean, Washington, Collins and Lincoln.
Gigi has long been your go-to for delicious pork buns, cheap beer and tattooed DJs. Now that they’ve launched brunch, it’ll be your new spot for Asian-fied breakfasts (Country Ham Buns, Shrimp and Grits), not to mention $5 mimosas. And now the tattooed DJs will be hungover.
