Wine Tasting in a 173-Year-Old Adobe

The year was 1842.

The place was Captain Salvador Vallejo’s estate.

And the storehouse was... not filled with wine.

Here in 2015 we have The Adobe at Three Sticks Winery, a mud-walled tasting room of pinot noirs housed in one of the oldest buildings around, now open by appointment.

General Vallejo. Pretty important guy in California’s history. Even has a city named after him. Also important: his brother. That’s the guy who made this place, which now has terra-cotta floors, low wooden ceilings and leather cockfighting chairs. (See the slideshow here.)

You’ll come here with a group of friends who share an appreciation for historic architecture and Sonoma reds. You’ll choose from three tasting rooms: the dining room overlooking the patio, the garden near the fire pit and the storehouse with, well, all of the wine. So maybe the storehouse. For efficiency.

Eventually, you’ll find yourself behind a table with five different wines. Start with the Casteñada, a blend of four kinds of syrah, viognier and marsanne. Then make your way through a Durell Vineyard chardonnay, a few different pinots and maybe a cab.

Great year so far.
