Casual-Date Perfection in the West Village

This is almost getting too easy.

Dating, that is.

Tinder. Remote-control wi-fi pleasure devices. Places like this...

Meet Baker & Co., casual-date perfection in the form of a West Village Italian spot. It’s open now.

This is a narrow space, which gives it that classic West Village charm you’re looking for in a date spot. But the front bar area’s got chairs and tables that fold down from the wall. The bar stools are reticulated. The end of the marble bar is double-sided (meaning you can sit on either side). It’s just got an answer for everything. Especially if the question is “Where are the rabbit meatballs?”

But if you’re beyond the tiptoeing, getting-to-know-you phase, go further back. For days like today, there’s a curved, wooden banquette just opposite the wine cellar that’s just made for longing gazes and arms over shoulders. Oh, and ample amounts of Brunello di Montalcino and smoked-eggplant ravioli. Perfect for those, too.

On nicer days, you’ll want the small, secluded back patio surrounded by the unpopulated backs of old neighborhood buildings. Actually that’s year-round now, thanks to a retractable roof.

Almost takes the fun out of it, really.
