The Coziest Oyster Bar of the Year

Today, we’d like you to meet someone in a dark alley.

They’ve got something raw and totally pure for you.

Yes, oysters...

Slide on into Virgola, a narrow sliver of an oyster and wine bar in Greenwich Village, now soft-open and officially opening Wednesday.

You know those dates where you say, “I know a little place.” This is what all those dates are hoping for. A six-foot-wide black-brick corridor that was literally an alley during the 19th century, and pretty much looks like one now. Only a charming one with candle sconces, gold padlocks on the walls (à la Rome’s locks of love) and the kind of two-top and red-tufted-leather-banquette situations you don’t typically find in alleys.

As for what you and said companion are doing in a place like this: a daily changing menu of three charcuterie and three fromage options, with an off-menu surprise of each and a daily tartare. Also: a single ceviche, and a handful of oyster options each day (with Island Creeks always on the board). If you’re looking for French wines... well, tough, because it’s all Montalcinos, Montepulcianos, proseccos and other Italian varietals here.

In conclusion: top-notch alley.
