Costata Analysis
Michael White Makes Steaks Here

We’ve got some huge news out of the world of Michael White steakhouses today.

And that news is... well, the fact that Michael White’s got a steakhouse now.

It’s called Costata, and it’s three stories of SoHo townhouse where tender beef, pasta and the fruits of the sea reign supreme, taking reservations starting tomorrow morning and opening Friday.

Costata means “ribeye” in Italian. What it also means: a red-marble-and-modern-art-bedecked indulgence chamber for two-man tomahawk ribeyes, Colorado lamb chops (all dry-aged for 28 days or more), pan-roasted swordfish, prosciutto-and-truffle garganelli and more than 500 wines.

Off-the-books dealings and more-serious-than-not dates will seem equally at home here. So either way, begin at the bar. There’s one on each of the first two floors. Marble. Compact. Promising cocktails by wd~50 vet Eben Freeman (try the celery gin, heirloom tomato, horseradish and Maggi seasoning Heirloom Snapper, thank us later). In other words, good bar.

Those floors are more or less similar. So post-beverage, settle into one of the gray leather banquettes along the wall. The art you see was done by a British guy who sometimes paints in zero gravity with Russian cosmonauts. Yeah, looks like he stole your idea.

As for the third floor: that’s a private space for you and 59 close friends.

And a Michael White steak party.
