Fall Guy
Steven Alan Opens Shop in Hayes Valley
Falling back an hour. Snow in Tahoe. A sharp decline in sundresses.
All clear signs that you’ll need to wear more layers.
But you’ll want to make each one count.
Just in case you need to peel them off slowly and tauntingly...
So allow us to present
Steven Alan, the first SF outpost of the easy-going, New York–based
layering maestro’s menswear shop, opening tomorrow in Hayes Valley.
When you’re looking to go Ivy League professor with a sly edge, this simple, bright shop will be a good
start. While most of the store is his label, you’ll also find other brands, like Junghans watches by the
register, as well as Double RL, Barbour gloves and shoes from Common Projects scattered about.
If you’ve been to his stores in New York and LA, you’re already familiar with the concept: slim,
slightly lived-in shirts with subtle, off-kilter details (like a twist collar or T-shirt lining) stacked in
the metal cubbies. Or sweaters with a modicum of preppiness (including a selection of buttoned wool
cardigans) hanging on the racks near some
suede boots in the back corner.
Just think of anything you’d need to suit up for a brisk fall day that might call for a warm, albeit
slightly professorial air, or maybe just a matinee at Sundance, and you’ll find it here.
There’s also a back door that opens up to a secret courtyard. Soon it’ll lead to a restaurant coming up
on Linden Street. But for now, it’s just for taking a breather.
Or to see if you need one more layer.
