State of the Union
Dapper Plaid and ’50s Denim in Brentwood

Think back.

Back to a time when men were gentlemen, women were Rita Hayworth, and everybody just hung around at polo matches and casual yacht parties.

In this case, it’s okay if your history is a little... revisionist.

Now as for what you’d be wearing: no problem. All you have to do is stop by Unionmade, the new outpost of San Francisco’s shrine to classic, yesteryear-ish Americana for your body, now open in the Brentwood Country Mart.

Drop in and it feels like you’ve gone back in time—to the glory days when nobody had ever heard the words “Von” and “Dutch” used in the same sentence.

So this is where you’ll bulk up on respectable backyard barbecue gear for the next few summers, or if you just need some chinos and jeans. It’s about one-fourth the size of the SF store, so they only have space for the three best years of vintage Levi’s—’44, ’47 and ’54. (Trust us, you don’t want to see the ’53 Levi’s.)

And if you’re going to be on a boat with a beer in your hand someday soon, they’ve also got some French nautical gear, plenty of plaid and chambray shirts, and knit Danish fisherman sweaters.

Note: this also works for dinner in Los Feliz.
