Aged Heat

The Oldest Booze You’ll Find in LA

Growing old gracefully is... not always an appreciated path in this town. Unless it’s ancient cognac and exceptional aged scotch you’re talking about. Here are five of the oldest forms of booze obtainable in the city.

The Macallan 64-Year-Old Single Malt
THE OLDEST SCOTCH AT TEN POUND

The Macallan 64-Year-Old Single Malt

What it is: The last obtainable shot of the Speyside distillery’s union of sherry-cask-aged single malt scotches from ’42, ’45 and ’46.
When you’ll drink it: When you’re feeling exceptionally generous (and slightly thirsty) after a fruitful Vegas weekend. This shot costs $64,000, which goes to your charity of choice.
Made before: The first monkey astronauts were launched into space.

Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6
THE OLDEST COGNAC AT WINDOWS LOUNGE

Louis XIII Rare Cask 42,6

What it is: Cognac put into the cask over 100 years ago. With eaux-de-vie from regional French distillers periodically blended over the next 60 years.
When you’ll drink it: By candlelight, after the short rib sliders are through and your swirling wrist is suitably warmed up.
Made before: Kirk Douglas.

1928 Château Mouton Rothschild
THE OLDEST WINE AT PATINA

1928 Château Mouton Rothschild

What it is: A dark, robust red Bordeaux from Pauillac, France’s legendary château.
When you’ll drink it: The night your Kevin Hart/Gérard Depardieu buddy film gets accepted at Cannes.
Made before: The first Academy Awards.

$4,950/bottle, available at Patina, 141 S Grand Ave, 213-972-3331

1908 D’Oliveiras Boal Madeira
THE OLDEST MADEIRA AT SCOPA ITALIAN ROOTS

1908 D’Oliveiras Boal Madeira

What it is: A coveted, full-bodied fortified wine made with grapes harvested in 1908 by a legendary Portuguese dynasty.
When you’ll drink it: Well, a beach bonfire and then a warming 1908 Madeira doesn’t not sound appealing...
Made before: Babe Ruth entered the majors.

Pappy Van Winkle’s 23-Year
THE OLDEST PAPPY AT WOOD & VINE

Pappy Van Winkle’s 23-Year

What it is: Practically-impossible-to-find Kentucky bourbon.
When you’ll drink it: ASAP. Before the bar’s two bottles get drained, forcing you to resort to a barely-less-impossible-to-find 15-year.
Made before: Anyone really gave a damn about Pappy Van Winkle.

$65/two-ounce pour, available at Wood & Vine, 6280 Hollywood Blvd, 323-334-3360
