Fire, Skulls and Mexican Food on 3rd Street

None 10 Photos Toca Madera
“Excuse me, waiter, there’s a burning skull in my tequila...”

Is something you may say at Toca Madera, a sexy new Mexican cantina with flaming drinks, flaming walls and tasty things that go with tequila, opening Friday in West Hollywood. Here’s the slideshow.

Great-looking place. Come with a drinking partner in the evening and poke around. You’ll see a wall with a Playboy pinup going full Día de los Muertos and walls that shoot fire. And private tequila lockers. And a 100-foot crystal quartz bar stocking over 100 tequilas.

Atmospheric digs for mango-guajillo-shrub tequila cocktails and tacos from a Border Grill vet, sure. But for more intimate dinners, you’ll hit the back patio under dangling succulents, detachable skylights and 26 grinning skulls. See, everybody likes watching tableside guacamole.

You’ll share shrimp in tequila beurre blanc, achiote chicken and Wagyu steak cooked over a sizzling stone. Stay awhile. You’re having fun. And churro ice cream sandwiches.

Eventually, you’ll be lured back up front, where DJs are spinning until 2am beside people crowding a photo booth—and bartenders are lighting 151-soaked sugar skulls on fire in everybody’s drinks.

Shameless Instagram ploy.
