New Order

A Sawtelle Sanctuary of Dim Sum

Everything is changing.

You no longer need to heed a swelling orchestra.

You actually kind of miss seeing Tony Bennett next to Lady Gaga.

And you might be hitting Sawtelle for dim sum...

Embrace the new reality at New School Kitchen, a bright nook for Chinese dumplings and green-chili pulled-pork sliders just left of the 405, soft-opening tomorrow on Sawtelle. (See the slideshow and the menu.)

It’s a small, stark-white nook with a giant black eagle muraled onto the wall. So there’s that. And there are also lacquered pork buns, shumai and har gow from the chef/owner of the Dim Sum Truck. So now you have tasty Chinese things on the same street you go to for tasty Japanese things.

A dinner of traditional-ish dim sum could happen inside or out on the front patio, sure. But you could also end up staring down some more unusual stuff like pork belly bao with crushed peanuts, sous-vide Hainan chicken or brussels sprouts with sweet-chili bacon.

There’s no Lego substitute.
