On the Road
Foie Gras PB&Js, Jimmy Carter and a Box Spring
Super Bowl. Gone. Gisele. Flown to wherever. And six more weeks of winter. You’re going to need to ride it
out somewhere...
You sense what’s coming: reclaimed wood, great beer and creative uses of pig.
Well, yes. But not without a mattress, some axe wounds and Jimmy Carter.
Say hello to
Boundary Road, H Street’s new rough-and-ready gastro-tavern, taking reservations now
for a Monday opening.
This place is like
American Industrial gone
mad. Its 200-year-old beams are marked with axe cuts, and the pièce de résistance is a chandelier made
from an old box spring (it’s a bit high to swing from, sorry).
At the ash-wood bar, the drafts are good even by H Street’s standards (Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter), and
the
charcuterie is
abundant (prosciutto from Iowa, bresaola from Uruguay). But with a date, you’ll want to grab the
first-come, first-served chef’s window looking into the open kitchen, for bison meat loaf and braised lamb
shoulder.
Of course, you’re not far from the Capitol, so if you’re taking out an entire caucus, claim the communal
high-top for 10. If they’re Republicans, the
Foie Gras Torchon PBJ, with homemade peanut butter
and peach-vanilla jelly, is your ticket—just the right combination of nostalgia and opulence. If they’re
Democrats, steer them toward the peanut-y
Jimmy Carter Cake for dessert.
Hopefully it’s more than a one-term cake.
