Three Bars and 40 Beers on H Street

None 4 Photos Smith Commons
This time of year is a period of excess. Tinsel hanging everywhere. Front yards filled with 40,000 watts of light.

Future House Speakers crying at every turn.

And now: three bars under one roof.

Welcome to Smith Commons, opening next Tuesday on H Street to give you as many perches as you deserve for your noshing and tippling needs.

This is like a 19th-century meetinghouse, with less talk of the shortcomings of Grover Cleveland. You’ll enter amid large, sepia-toned photos from the Library of Congress, burlap curtains, original brick from the space’s days as a carpet warehouse and gleaming white oak floors (apparently there was no carpet left over).

This is the spot to bring that spin instructor from your gym, where you can summon a classic cocktail and a bottle from the creative wine list, before tucking in to French-American dishes like duck confit, veal porterhouse and pork chop with manchego mac and cheese.

But for those wilder hours, you’ll want to ascend to the second floor, where another bar beckons, this one boasting picture windows and two brick fireplaces. Here, you’ll head for the custom tables and stools that crank up or down depending on how lounge-y you’re feeling, and let yourself loose on bar food like grilled prawns and crab sliders, to say nothing of the large-format bottles on the craft beer list, like 750 ml Ommegang Three Philosophers or Southern Tier’s Iniquity.

Go big or go home, you always say.
