A Baker’s Tale

A Trippy Sweets Spot in Wicker Park

Once upon a time, there was a beautiful girl named Alice...

And she wanted to meet you somewhere for coffee.

“Oh, anywhere,” she said. “It’s really not important.”

Suddenly, you’re thrown down a topsy-turvy rabbit hole where “not important” means “I better be amused or... off with your head.”

So you casually toss out the name of this place: A Baker’s Tale, which is like a fairy tale wrapped in a pastry shop wrapped in Wicker Park, now open.

Magic abounds inside: an Alice in Wonderland theme that somehow isn’t too cutesy. A full-scale artificial tree in the window and boxwood-covered walls that don’t make you feel like you’re in a Rainforest Cafe. Also, there are bacon-topped cream puffs and banana-split éclairs—which may not be magical, but are close enough on a dreary Wednesday afternoon.

It’s also a stellar let’s-just-get-coffee date place. The most comfortable seats—purely coincidentally—are near the exit.

Your date will nibble salted caramel macarons. You’ll try a roast-beef-and-provolone sandwich. You’ll share some spicy chocolate popcorn. You’ll talk about your favorite books, movies and the way that spicy chocolate popcorn really brings out her eyes...

Though a happy ending is not guaranteed.
