Really Old Booze. We Found You Some.

Cobblestone. Fenway Park. Tom Menino. Boston likes its old things. Including alcohol. And to demonstrate the latter, we now present you with some of the oldest booze Boston’s drinking establishments have to offer. Turns out, it’s really old.

THE OLDEST RUM AT DRINK

1970 Black Tot

What It Is: A blend of rums (the oldest being from the ’40s) made for the British Royal Navy before they axed the naval rum ration. So... before they stopped being fun.
When You’ll Drink It: While at a dimly lit corner table, carefully suppressing any pirate references.
Made Before: Rocky.

THE OLDEST COGNAC AT L’ESPALIER

1914 Pierre Ferrand

What It Is: A bottle of cognac distilled in 1914 that waited 75 years to be bottled. Cognac’s really patient.
When You’ll Drink It: Rendezvousing with French-accented company; while earnestly using the term “mouthfeel.”
Made Before: The first Charleston was danced.

THE OLDEST SCOTCH AT THE HAWTHORNE

1965 Strathisla

What It Is: A scotch aged for 43 years by the oldest operating distillery in Scotland.
When You’ll Drink It: Posing for a dust-jacket photo; catching up with Sean Connery.
Made Before: The Beatles broke up.

THE OLDEST BEER AT EASTERN STANDARD

1996 Vapeur Cochonne

What It Is: A Belgian strong ale at the tail end of its awkward teenage years.
When You’ll Drink It: Working through some moules Provençal at the marble bar; pretending to thumb through back issues of BeerAdvocate.
Made Before: The Seinfeld finale.

THE OLDEST WINE AT MOOO

1900 Barbeito Malvasia Madeira

What It Is: A centenarian dessert wine from an archipelago in the North Atlantic Ocean.
When You’ll Drink It: Solemnly contemplating the span of a human life; eating steak au poivre in a wine cellar.
Made Before: Bartending in suspenders was ironic.
