A Museum-Quality Shop Downtown

The worst part about the Smithsonian: no, not the tourists.

It’s that you can’t point to the artifacts and say, “I’ll take it.”

Here to solve that problem: The Great Republic, a new shop out of Colorado filled with rare maps, flags and books, now open at CityCenterDC.

This is the kind of shop you’ll duck into when you need a gift for the senator who has everything. Or when you need a new flask for yourself. Or when you’d just like to smell some leather.

And bourbon. Arrive in the evening, when they’re apt to pour you a tipple of Eagle Rare. Take a load off in an easy chair and drink in your surroundings—oak millwork everywhere, chandeliers made from a motorcycle chain and a conveyor belt... to say nothing of the 13-star American flag, war bond posters from WWI and a wall-size naval military map from 1863. It’s all for sale.

If you’re not turning your living room into a museum, they’ve got plenty of other stuff, too, like handmade slingshots, ceramic flasks and anything that can be made from leather, from messenger bags to old-school baseballs to toothpick cases.

You really do need to organize all your toothpicks.
