Suits, Shirts and Surfboards in Union Square

Pretty typical Italian-suit-maker situation here.

Colorful ties: sure. Colorful jeans: ... okay. Cashmere-inlaid surfboards: pardon?

Oh, you must be at Kiton. Their first San Francisco store is open now, and it looks like this. And yes, they’re also making surfboards.

Upon entering: turquoise jeans. Purple pocket squares. Fritz, the store manager. Great guy. You’ll navigate past the boldly clad mannequins, through the hall of shirts, and spot a handsome sports coat.

The style: so reversible.

The fabric: so soft. Everything’s handmade in Naples, where they also mill much of their own fabric.

The size: not right. (It’s more like a showroom. Fritz or an accomplice will bring out the rolling racks with whatever you need.)

And you might’ve noticed, colors are encouraged here. You could picture yourself outdoors at a business lunch in a pink striped button-down. Maybe that meeting is on a boat. Maybe it’s not. Maybe you’re going made-to-measure on a suit today. Maybe you’re not.

They also work with a surf shop down in Ventura to create custom boards. You could check out some swatches. Choose the one you want, and it’ll be inlaid in the fiberglass.

Get ready to hear things like “Is that cashmere in your surfboard?”

There’s a sentence you didn’t think you’d read today.
