Things to do for July 28, 2011

The Weekender

A Secret Burger, Gratis Bacon and Building a Motorcycle

The weekend is eating its Wheaties.

Thursday
Banh Mi from the Nom Nom Truck
LA STORY

Banh Mi from the Nom Nom Truck

Okay, so it’s true that they started in LA first. But there’s more than enough room in this state for honey-grilled pork banh mi and lemongrass chicken tacos. Get both just to prove that point.

Jul 28, 4:30-8:30pm, Nom Nom, at Off the Grid Upper Haight (Waller and Stanyan) and various Bay Area locations, 415-413-3924

Friday
Secret Burger at Prospect
SECRET SERVICE

Secret Burger at Prospect

You won’t see it on any menu. But it exists. It’s the elusive secret, off-menu burger. Ask for it, and on top of their regular burger (a quarter-pound of house-ground chuck on a homemade bun) you’ll get pork belly, kimchi and jack cheese. Try to act surprised.

Daily, 5:30pm-close, Prospect, 300 Spear St (at Folsom), 415-247-7770

Bourbon and Bacon at Koko’s
TAKING SHOTS

Bourbon and Bacon at Koko’s

While these Tunnel Top vets are closing on Saturday, they’ll be relocating a few blocks down Polk. So a proper send-off would be to participate in the final Bourbon & Bacon Happy Hour. It’s where you order $6 George Dickels, and they toss in gratis center-cut slabs of applewood-smoked bacon. But you knew that.

Jul 29, 5-9pm, Koko Cocktails, 1060 Geary St (at Van Ness), 415-885-4788

Monday
Pop-Up Dinners at Slim’s
THE REAL SLIM SHADY

Pop-Up Dinners at Slim’s

You normally head to Slim’s to hear bands. And starting this Monday, it’ll also be your destination for braised lamb cheeks and honey-glazed short ribs. Jetset Chef, Radio Africa & Kitchen and Cathead’s BBQ are kicking off this lineup of rotating chefs. Presumably they cook better than they sing.

Aug 1, 5:30-10pm, Slim’s, 333 11th St (at Folsom), 415-255-0333

Next Thursday
Building a Motorcycle from Scratch
HOG WILD

Building a Motorcycle from Scratch

It’s not every day that you get to witness professionals building a custom Jack Pine bike from scratch. So you’ll want to stop by Triple Aught’s warehouse to watch as the crew from Hammarhead Industries condenses 90 days of building into three. Ride it at your own risk...
