A Dime-Size Wine Bar from a Slanted Door Vet

If you had to come up with the perfect amount of stools in a wine bar, you’d probably go with:

Two.

Uh, let’s go with your backup answer: just 16 stools max, please. And, okay, they can throw in a little bench, too.

Welcome to Birba, a former garage that’s met its new life as an intimate wine bar—it’s opening tonight. Here’s the slideshow, and here’s the menu.

Consider it your new go-to date spot. It’s a little out of the way, in a good way, and it’s pronounced “beer-bah,” which is Italian for “mischievous one.” We can only assume this also applies to your date.

You’ll enter the tiny bar and see it’s the kind of place that’s more about a light nautical vibe than, say, cheesy wine barrels. Nothing wrong with that.

Grab a couple stools and get to perusing the long list of mostly Spanish and Italian wines—the owner was formerly a sommelier at the Slanted Door, so you’re in good hands. Just know the Heger 2012 pinot noir comes by the liter. Between glasses, you’ll probably be seeing some crostone with smashed peas, mint and mozzarella.

Or the tortilla española.

Or the chicken-liver mousse.

Came for the wine, stayed for the mousse.
