Today, a quick game of word association.

We say “jazz.” You say: “New Orleans.”

We say “New Orleans.” You say: “Bourbon Street.”

We say “bourbon.” You say: “yes, please.”

And with that, we move to South at SFJAZZ, a bourbon-slinging, fried-food-dishing café from Slanted Door’s Charles Phan and team, opening Tuesday in Hayes Valley’s new jazz center.

SFJAZZ. You know the spot. Newish concert hall for... jazz. Anyway, this is inside that, and it’s where you’ll take a date for pre- (or post-, or mid-) show cocktails and Southern-inspired—read: fried—snacks.

The whole place is enclosed in glass and overlooks Fell Street, though at the tip of the bar, you’ll also have a clear vantage point to the main stage. (Uh, it helps if there’s a show happening.) Oh, and the tables: they’re made from the same wood as that stage.

Pull up to one and order some crispy alligator, shrimp and andouille gumbo or mini muffulettas. Your drink options: generous and New Orleans-y. Try the bourbon-and-absinthe-laced Battle of New Orleans or a Filibuster, made with rye, maple and an egg.

We hear John Boehner loves it.
